Reading an App Development Company Portfolio Properly

August 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Case studies are marketing. Here is how to extract signal from a portfolio, references and app store listings.

Check the store, not the deck

Search the app. Read the recent reviews. Look at the update history — a product shipped and then abandoned within three months tells you something the case study will not.

Ask what the team actually did

Plenty of portfolios include projects where the agency did one screen. A straight answer about scope, team size and duration is a good sign in itself.

References beat ratings

Directory profiles on Clutch, GoodFirms, DesignRush and G2 are useful for filtering, but a fifteen-minute call with a past client tells you more than every review combined. Ask specifically about what went wrong and how it was handled.
